MATCH REPORTS

On what was predicted to be a stinking hot day for cricket, the Melbourne University Cricket Club were looking to build on last weekends results of 2 wins and 2 losses against this weeks opponents The Bombers.

1st XI

The 1st's sweated their way out to Windy Hill hoping the grounds name would live up to itself. After losing the toss we were sent into the field, and luckily The Hill was a little Windy, providing some respite from the heat. G.K again trudged up the hill with immediate success capturing 3 early wickets to have the bombers at 3 for 13.

However, The Students lost their way a little to let The Bombers get away to 3 for 115 before the introduction of Scott Sanders had the perfect effect, braking the partnership.

The bowlers toiled hard in the heat, however it seemed to be one man who was intent on getting his first big haul in the 1st XI. Big Greg Kennedy bowled tremendously well, ending up with the remarkable figures of: 20 Overs, 8 Maidens, 6 Wickets for 46 Runs. It was an incredible display of bowling where the Big Man bowled ball after ball on the spot, and deservedly got his first 5 (and 6) wicket haul in 1st XI Premier Cricket. The day ended with The Students on 0/13.

2nd XI

The 2's also lost the toss and were sent into the field. Again an early wicket to Savill aided by debutant Steve Carlile with one, followed by another two devastating blows by Savill had The Students off to a flier.

However, much like the Firsts, we lost our way a little and let The Bombers put on a 40 and then 70 run partnership. Despite this though, Peter THE Murray, Matty Hewat and Doc Hibbert bowled tight together to restrict the Bombers to a total of 232. Savill being the main destroyer with 4/61 and Carlile with 3/32.

3rd XI

The 3's had another interesting day, which seems to be becoming a tradition. And as tradition dictates, we were routed by the same bloke who took 10 wickets in last year's semi final. We were bowled out for a dismal 122, with only Eben Martin and Polks to pass 25.

However, in a strange turn of events which seems to always happen against Essendon in the 3's (about the last 3 or 4 times we've played them!) we fought back hard to get them 5 for 53, still requiring 69 for victory. Andy Thomas doing the damage yet again with 3 wickets.

4th XI

The 4's were sent into field in the stinking heat aswell. And early were looking the goods, with Timmy Wetherell making a smashing comeback with 2 early wickets. However, the heat started to take its toll, and we let them get away, finally bowling them out for 243. On a day where the wickets were shared, with Tim finishing with 3, Danny "Footlong" with 2 and one each to the remaining bowlers.

CLUB

A good start to the round for the Students with teams looking in positions to win. However, with another hot day forecast early in the week we will have to be right on top of our game. The Bombers are a quality outfit, and we will have to train hard and come out fighting hard early.

GO MUCC!!!
